A few words from Laura Hare, Headteacher, Park School

Welcome to Park School.
A wonderful place to be.

It only takes one visit to our enchanting School amid Dartington Estate to become captivated by our ethos, environment and sense of community.

It was my first visit, which led to me joining Park School as Headteacher in September 2023. I found a magical world of opportunities and am delighted to lead our unique school, where a passion for learning and building relationships is emulated in everything we do.

Park School is a safe and happy place for staff, children and our community. A place where we are all encouraged to be our true, authentic selves. We welcome you to visit us. Come and experience how we care for ourselves, each other and our world at Park School.

A walk in our grounds with our children introduces you to a world of stories and imagination. The children will most likely talk about their free time when they play in the woods, on the fields, on the swings, in the sand or up the trees. This time is vital for our children to grow, experience and be the drivers of their learning. They build strong connections to themselves, others and nature. Although they will share their extensive knowledge of edible and inedible plants, they will also talk about football!

Our grounds are also used to support children's guided learning in a huge variety of ways. We plan our curriculum around the children's needs and interests and the needs of nature as the seasons change and progress.

Children learn in our gardens, forest school areas, and around our grounds, and exploring locally to extend and enhance their learning.

Our class spaces are home-from-home environments set up to meet the diverse needs of our children. Starting in Our Early Years, continuous style provision is used for children aged 3 to 6, and some elements of this practice continue right through the school. Progressively, we offer structured learning across the curriculum in relevant length bursts and then facilitate child-centred activities to explore new learning and deepen existing skills in creatively crafted play-based scenarios.

The children would like to show you the four stages of our school journey by visiting the youngest learners in Hedgehogs, then Squirrels, Rabbits, and on to Foxes, our oldest learners. You will probably notice how well the staff and children communicate; we use first names, and everyone greets each other with a smile.

We have other indoor spaces to broaden the range of experiences children gain while at Park School. Our children always love to show you the art studio. Upstairs, we have two rooms full of resources to inspire awe and wonder. Children learn new skills and techniques and how to use various tools, apparatuses, and mediums to create through projects. Time is also given for children to make their own creations, which is essential.

The children also have access to The Nest, our sensory space, designed to support children in self-regulation and provide ways to help them understand how to look after themselves. The Together Space is used to come together as a school in various ways, including our weekly School Meeting, where children's views are raised, explored and addressed. We have 'time together' twice a week to deepen our understanding of our 3 fundamental principles: Looking after ourselves, Looking after each other and looking after our planet. We make time for being present together, celebrating our growth, singing and being mindful. Being celebrated helps our children flourish, and there is usually a queue at the end waiting to collect a high five! At Park School, children are taught to grow their motivation intrinsically through learning, relationships, collaboration and community.

The team working at Park School are unlike any I have known, and the community around us is so strong. The passion, dedication and shared beliefs held amongst us make Park School an extraordinary place to be.

All our teachers are highly qualified, and we prioritise learning together as a team. Some team members have been at Park School for years and carry the true essence of human-scale practice forward. Some staff, like myself, are more recent and bring a depth of experience, passion and a belief in what Park School offers.

Together, we aim to ensure children have the best experience of their childhood and primary years, flourish as individuals and build secure foundations and a love of learning to carry with them on their unique paths.

Welcome to Park School; it's a wonderful place to be.
